Islam Makhachev has suggested that his time inside the Octagon could be approaching its final chapter as he continues to defend his decision not to compete in January.
The UFC welterweight champion has faced mounting criticism since withdrawing from plans to headline UFC 336 against Carlos Prates. The promotion subsequently booked Prates against undefeated contender Michael Morales for the interim welterweight title, leaving Makhachev expected to return later in 2027.
The decision has also drawn criticism from UFC CEO Dana White, who believes the division cannot remain inactive while its champion waits for a preferred return date.
Islam Makhachev Explains Why He Wants to Face the Best Contender Before Retirement
Makhachev has repeatedly pushed back against suggestions that he is avoiding dangerous challengers. The Russian previously argued that Prates needed to earn his opportunity, while also indicating that he wanted to face the most deserving opponent rather than rush into a January appearance.

No way, islam beats Prates and Morales back to back. Smart of him to let them mess each other up first.
If you can’t fight twice in a year, then vacate the title.
