The bitcoin King
Seems like Roryâs been making the social media rounds in the last few months. Heâs very likable, imo. But damn, I donât want to give that podcast any views.
What does red king mean?
âRed Kingâ was never accepted by the masses.
Robbie Lawlerâs second fight with Rory MacDonald left him with battle wounds that had UFC boss Dana White concerned for Lawlerâs health.
In a recent interview on UFCâs YouTube channel, Lawler was asked about his epic rematch with MacDonald at UFC 189, which ended with Lawler scoring a dramatic fifth-round knockout to retain his welterweight title. The battle is widely hailed as one of the greatest ever in the history of combat sports.
Afterwards, Lawlerâs lip was visibly split and he recalls White telling him not to exacerbate the injury post-fight.
âIt actually healed pretty fast within, like, two weeks,â Lawler said. âI was like, âMan, this actually looks pretty freaking good.â Obviously, the UFC [had] everything lined up so food wasnât falling out, water wasnât falling out of my mouth, so it was good. I didnât realize how bad it was when I was in the fight and Iâm talking to Dana and heâs, like, âHey man, donât talk.â I just started laughing.
âBecause really in my eyes, you ever seen the movie Predator? Itâs one of my favorite lines: âHey, youâre bleeding.â âI donât have time to bleed.â So thatâs kind of my mindset. Whatever, thereâs blood, itâs not a big deal, but I didnât realize it was this lip.â
Lawler defeated MacDonald twice, first via a split decision at UFC 167 in 2013 and then in their championship rematch two years later. It was the second meeting in which both men were pushed beyond their limits, resulting in a number of memorable (and grisly) scenes, including Lawler spitting blood on the canvas at the end of Round 4.
âAt that point in time, itâs funny, I was thinking, âLetâs go,ââ Lawler said recalling the incident. âI felt like he was running, but really it wasnât, he was being strategic and I was like, âLetâs go, itâs freaking time,â is what I was thinking.â
The end of the fight also etched an indelible mark in fansâ memories as Lawler broke MacDonald with punches a minute into the final round to force the stoppage. Unlike many of Lawlerâs best knockouts, it didnât end with âRuthlessâ clobbering his opponent into oblivion and that was a conscious choice.
âThatâs probably the one time in my fights that I didnât just try to destroy somebody when they were down because I knew it was over,â Lawler said. âNormally, Iâm like ârraaaahâ but I could tell this was over.â
Interviewer Dean Thomas praised Lawler for the classic fight, which was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame Fight Wing in 2023 with Lawler later inducted himself into the Modern Wing in 2025. Based on Thomasâ criteria, he doesnât see how any other bout could be considered better than Lawler vs. MacDonald 2.
âGreatest fight of all time,â Thomas said. âIn order for it to be a great fight, just in general, itâs all about storytelling. So the first thing is you have to have characters in the story people care about even before the story. So being champion and having Rory MacDonald, who comes from such a great camp, the protege of Georges St-Pierre, you had already beaten [MacDonald before]. Thereâs just built-in story in just the two characters already and thatâs something that we care about because there are great fights, but if you donât care about the people, itâs on the undercard. It gets tossed out. But when thereâs already built-in storyline between the characters that we love, itâs automatic.
âNow, for the storytelling, it has to be points where it can end at any moment and Robbie possesses that. One shot. So weâre at the edge of our seat just waiting for that moment and then what you need is back and forth, and that fight had it. Back and forth. Times where we almost thought it was over. He kicked you in the head, like, âOh no, this is it!â And then you hit him back and, âOh no, this is it!â It has to go back and forth.
âAnd then, visuals. That was the most important part of this fight, the visuals. We saw how it escalated from Round 1, heâs got a little blood coming down his nose; Round 2, itâs coming out of his eye and his nose; Round 3, now youâre busted up, and then as the fight goes on blood is everywhere. The visuals. And then to cap it off, which makes this really the best fight of all time, the finish. It had everything. It checks all 10 boxes for great fights. No other fight in the history of MMA checks all 10 boxes like this one does.â
Agreed.
