Seems like Rory’s been making the social media rounds in the last few months. He’s very likable, imo. But damn, I don’t want to give that podcast any views.

What does red king mean?

“Red King” was never accepted by the masses.

Lawler recalls why Dana White told him ‘Don’t talk’ after gruesome Rory MacDonald fight

Robbie Lawler’s second fight with Rory MacDonald left him with battle wounds that had UFC boss Dana White concerned for Lawler’s health.

In a recent interview on UFC’s YouTube channel, Lawler was asked about his epic rematch with MacDonald at UFC 189, which ended with Lawler scoring a dramatic fifth-round knockout to retain his welterweight title. The battle is widely hailed as one of the greatest ever in the history of combat sports.

Afterwards, Lawler’s lip was visibly split and he recalls White telling him not to exacerbate the injury post-fight.

“It actually healed pretty fast within, like, two weeks,” Lawler said. “I was like, ‘Man, this actually looks pretty freaking good.’ Obviously, the UFC [had] everything lined up so food wasn’t falling out, water wasn’t falling out of my mouth, so it was good. I didn’t realize how bad it was when I was in the fight and I’m talking to Dana and he’s, like, ‘Hey man, don’t talk.’ I just started laughing.

“Because really in my eyes, you ever seen the movie Predator? It’s one of my favorite lines: ‘Hey, you’re bleeding.’ ‘I don’t have time to bleed.’ So that’s kind of my mindset. Whatever, there’s blood, it’s not a big deal, but I didn’t realize it was this lip.”

Lawler defeated MacDonald twice, first via a split decision at UFC 167 in 2013 and then in their championship rematch two years later. It was the second meeting in which both men were pushed beyond their limits, resulting in a number of memorable (and grisly) scenes, including Lawler spitting blood on the canvas at the end of Round 4.

“At that point in time, it’s funny, I was thinking, ‘Let’s go,’” Lawler said recalling the incident. “I felt like he was running, but really it wasn’t, he was being strategic and I was like, ‘Let’s go, it’s freaking time,’ is what I was thinking.”

The end of the fight also etched an indelible mark in fans’ memories as Lawler broke MacDonald with punches a minute into the final round to force the stoppage. Unlike many of Lawler’s best knockouts, it didn’t end with “Ruthless” clobbering his opponent into oblivion and that was a conscious choice.

“That’s probably the one time in my fights that I didn’t just try to destroy somebody when they were down because I knew it was over,” Lawler said. “Normally, I’m like ‘rraaaah’ but I could tell this was over.”

Interviewer Dean Thomas praised Lawler for the classic fight, which was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame Fight Wing in 2023 with Lawler later inducted himself into the Modern Wing in 2025. Based on Thomas’ criteria, he doesn’t see how any other bout could be considered better than Lawler vs. MacDonald 2.

“Greatest fight of all time,” Thomas said. “In order for it to be a great fight, just in general, it’s all about storytelling. So the first thing is you have to have characters in the story people care about even before the story. So being champion and having Rory MacDonald, who comes from such a great camp, the protege of Georges St-Pierre, you had already beaten [MacDonald before]. There’s just built-in story in just the two characters already and that’s something that we care about because there are great fights, but if you don’t care about the people, it’s on the undercard. It gets tossed out. But when there’s already built-in storyline between the characters that we love, it’s automatic.

“Now, for the storytelling, it has to be points where it can end at any moment and Robbie possesses that. One shot. So we’re at the edge of our seat just waiting for that moment and then what you need is back and forth, and that fight had it. Back and forth. Times where we almost thought it was over. He kicked you in the head, like, ‘Oh no, this is it!’ And then you hit him back and, ‘Oh no, this is it!’ It has to go back and forth.

“And then, visuals. That was the most important part of this fight, the visuals. We saw how it escalated from Round 1, he’s got a little blood coming down his nose; Round 2, it’s coming out of his eye and his nose; Round 3, now you’re busted up, and then as the fight goes on blood is everywhere. The visuals. And then to cap it off, which makes this really the best fight of all time, the finish. It had everything. It checks all 10 boxes for great fights. No other fight in the history of MMA checks all 10 boxes like this one does.”

Agreed.
