So they just kicked him out of the tournament? He must have had a terrible attitude or something but he was entertaining in the cage - odd to kick him out altogether .. he’s the type you feed to guys like Tank or Coleman
Early mma(ufc 1-10) was fascinating.. the mix of styles and tournaments where we saw different types of fighters every show. You truly did not know what to expect and it usually delivered
These days mma is almost too predictable
Hess would have beat Hoyce
The entire fight? It’s since been scrubbed - I have no idea why it’s so hard to find
I thought both guys looked fat and unserious. That was my first impression.
From what I heard, he wasn’t apologetic at all about the eye-gouging because he said he fights no rules. He was willing to take the fine. In those days they wouldn’t give you a DQ for breaking the LAWS of the Octagon. I don’t think they wanted to bring someone like that back.
He wanted to fight a Gracie
So they gave him Vitor Gracie
Did he use “Victor” Gracie in that fight? I can’t remember.
I actually watched this fight live.
I talked briefly to John Hess after the fight and for some reason he thought I had some kind of influence at the UFC. He asked me to talk to Art Davies to try and convince him to give him more fights. I just shrugged and said “sure” lol.
Fang Maturi!!
Anderson was in good shape - he was using 120 pound dumbbells for single arm rows .. not bad
Nothing outslops the Tank/Ferozzo fight
So it was an intentional eye poke - one that he didn’t even regret afterwards whrn told my promoters or officials?! Damn he isn’t the brightest
Yeah, watch the fight and listen to when Big John screams, “WATCH THE EYES!”
I’m not saying he wasn’t strong. I was asked my first impressions. Anderson was short and chubby with a cheesy mustache. He looked like he was carrying >20% body fat.
Anderson was the guy who owned a couple or maybe just one nude steakhouse joint. I vaguely remember that he got in some kind of dispute with whatever city it was in and made the city pay him off to close it.
He was also the ref at an IFC event, I think it was the one in Ukraine but I might be wrong. He bribed some people to get that show to happen I think.
Later on it came out he was big in the white power circles, probably something most people here think is awesome, and got busted for being a meth kingpin and is in prison now.
eddie goldman always said andy had permanent eye damage from that
I haven’t heard of Andy Anderson outside of mma. I did talk to him at a fight in Indiana that he reffed at years ago.
If he is in the White nationalist movement it’s only at a local level. Noone i know has heard of him in the movement and even if they had he would be looked down upon for dealing drugs
Yeah you can see Andy at various different early UFC events sitting in the front row - rumor had it he knew a few ufc higher ups and he let them eat free and get other bonuses at his restaurant and in return, they talked to art Davie and got him to let Andy in the ufc.
Im still not sure what Andy’s skill set or background was although he did knock out Tanks training partner Paul Herrera once in a street fight
The circus/spectacle aspect was a fun part of the early UFCs. There would usually be at least one freak show fight with a giant or sumo-like dude. Also, some guys were able to get in because they had the right manager who could work out a deal with Art Davie.
