Jon Jones is getting into the bare knuckle business.
“Bones” won’t be competing, as he remains under contract with UFC. Instead, the former heavyweight champion will serve as ambassador for IBA Bare Knuckle in Russia. In short, Jones will get paid to shake hands, kiss babies, and say all sorts of wonderful things about the promotion.
One day you’re sponsored by Nike, the next day you’re peddling knuckle sandwiches in St. Petersburg.
“This is MMA legend Jon ‘Bones’ Jones and I am excited to announce my new partnership as an ambassador for IBA Bare Knuckle,” Jones said in a statement uploaded to his various social media channels. “My first event with the company is going to be in St Petersburg on March 28. I’m super excited to see you all there and let’s have a show time.”
This plays like one of those awkward political ads for city council.
No word on how this new role affects his current job as Chief Performance Officer.
Jones, 38, is looking for extra income after rejecting a $15 million offer to compete on the upcoming UFC White House card. There’s always the chance “Bones” returns to the promotion and finishes out his existing contract; however, it seems more likely that Jones will settle for whatever odd jobs and upstarts continue to come his way.
