I think he’s more worried about his legacy at this point. He’s only fighting Stipe to say he defended the belt.
And Aspinall could potentially spoil the “undefeated champ champ” claim he will say forever.
In his last three fights he struggled to close wins past two LHW Journeymen, and beat Cyril Gane who is barely average. That’s in the last seven fuckin years, and a lot of drugs ago. I’d say he knows full well Aspinall would flatten him at this point

He wasted a large chunk of his prime. He is lucky he put as much activity in as he did in his early 20s.
It’s got to be hard to focus on training that long with no fight ahead and his loot, though.

I’m a huge Jones fan but he can’t retire without fighting Tom.
It’s the last fight that’s needed after Stipe and then he can sail off into the sunset without anyone saying he’s not the GOAT

In a perfect world Stipe pulls out and Jones is forced to fight Tom
Jon would never except aspinall as a last minute replacement…even tho Aspinall will likely be the backup, Jon would tell Dana to fuck himself and keep waiting for Stipe.

I agree that Jones messed up taking years off and he messed up outside of the octagon a lot but when it comes to fighting, you can’t deny the greatness.

Fedor still has more finishes than Jones has fights.
And Hendo lands that H-bomb on anyone most are going down.
Fighting past his prime doesn’t take away from the greatest HW run in MMA history.
What isn’t impressive is purposely avoiding an absolutely stacked HW division for years, then jumping in after most of the killers were either done or on their way out, to claim a “dual championship” for your legacy – then defend against a 42 year old who is coming off a loss and hasn’t fought in 3 years.
Nothing says “GOAT” like ducking killers and padding your record with long layoffs.
Dude has 3 finishes in the last 11 years.
