That old school Everlast shirt with Larry Holmes is awesome, still got that shirt? Lol
Very cool. Thanks for sharing
MOVED To UG BT
Nah, it’s individual showers. Lol.
Hell, yeah. I got it signed by Larry & put it in my collection of boxing memorabilia.
Half of which is in a storage facility, unfortunately. I’ve got a whole trunk full of old boxing Tees & jackets.
Here’s a few more.
Earnie Shavers.
Ernie Terrell.
George Chuvalo.
Razor Ruddock.
Greg Page was the largest fighter I ever sparred with. He liked his first few rounds of sparring to be against smaller, quicker guys so he could loosen up & get a good sweat going before the heavyweights stepped in with him.
Chuck Wepner.
Ron Lyle.
Roberto Duran. I was supposed to spend four weeks in his camp as he prepared to fight Tony Biglen in Buffalo, but I tore up my knee ( again ) while out for a run. I was out in a rural area & stepped into a post hole. And, that ended my opportunity to be a Duran sparring partner.
There was also a chance that I’d have landed a televised spot on the undercard. So, it was a costly injury & I spent weeks pissed off & depressed over it.
Duran’s legendary trainer, Ray Arcel.
Billy Conn.
Angelo Dundee.
Archie Moore.
Matthew Saad Muhammed.
Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
Bob Foster with me & my best friend & cornerman.
Former Flyweight champion, Miguel Canto.
Vinnie Pazienza.
Michael & Leon Spinks a long with my buddy, Ron a former pro fighter & my sometimes sparring partner.
John Amos.
Bert Young.
My buddy, Marc Mero’s wife, Rena Mero aka Sable & eventually, Rena Lesner.
Greg Haugan.
I was an exceptionally durable fighter with a rock for a head, so I was never dropped or stopped by shots to the head during my career ( though I was stopped twice on cuts & because I was a bloody mess due to a broken nose as an amateur. Plus, Matt Hilton did drop me with a wicked body shot that bruised & separated my ribs while sparring ), but there were two fighters that I had no interest in working for. Tommy Hearns & Julian Jackson. I had no interest in taking that kind of abuse on a daily basis.
Very cool.
Thanks for sharing.
Not to be a dick, but you look like a manlet next to a lot of those guys.
How big/tall were you back in those days?
Great pics thanks for sharing
I’m 5’8” & I fought in the welterweight & light-middleweight divisions for the most part ( 147-154 lbs ).
Awesome pics!
Is your son really named Nigel Benn?
Great thread you must have a lot of stories to go with those pics. Appreciate you sharing!
If you were a chick, we’d say you got dem crazy eyes
Veey cool thread though. Lotsa history there and more than a few legends. Thanks for sharing
Absolutely.
I initially just wanted to name him something that represented our English heritage. And Nigel was one of the three choices that his mother & I agreed on. Then, the thought of naming him after one of my favorite fighters came to me. So, the choices were Nigel Benn, Colin Jones & Ian Clyde. I knew his mom wouldn’t want the other two, so we settled on Nigel Benn.
And you’d be surprised how popular his name is with girls. Of which, he gets the cream of the crop. Lol.
It’s difficult for me to believe it, but he’s 27 now. Damn time flies.
Anyhow here’s a more recent pic of him.
Sure thing, man.
Awesome choice, I hope the real Nigel knows you named your son after him!
Oh, does, indeed. Ray Leonard called him up & told him about my son while we were in his gym. I got to talk to Nigel Benn for a bit & tell him that he was one of my all-time favorite fighters. It was very cool.
