Nerd Alert! Magic the Gathering

I just finished this match. Dunno what this guy was thinking. Above, he attacked with his Commander, Aragorn, the Uniter, for 7, I blocked with Phyrexian Obliterator and he had to sac 7 permanents.

Then I played Sheoldred, the Apocalypse. He attacked again and I blocked with it. He conceded.

Can’t help wondering what he was thinking during that sequence of turns…

Man, fuck this guy. Boardwipe after boardwipe after boardwipe after boardwipe. I was able to bring back Muldrotha + Lord of Extinction or Carrior Grub each turn, generating bat and bird tokens… then the asshole would boardwipe me again.

That is so exhausting. Depending on the deck I’m running, sometimes I’ve got more threats than they have wipes. Nothing better than pulling out the win after six or eight board wipes.

Yeah, I’ve done that before, too, but today I just found it to be too tedious, especially because he played Overwhelming Forces and completely reloaded his hand.

That’s tough, especially in the Brawl format.

Fuck! Toshi (upper-right) hit me for 30 in one swoop. I was so mana-fucked I conceded because I was adding nothing to the game. Then MRLLIW played Devastation Tide and returned all non-land permanents to everyone’s hands. It wouldn’t have mattered for me. I should have mulliganed again, but I had already used my free one and had 2x 2 mana value spells. I hoped I would draw some more, but only managed 2 more lands for the game. Grrrrr…

I’ve switched to Ziatora

I utterly annihilated them with Ziatora! They were unable to get rid of my fling engine: Captivating Crew + Ziatora, the Incinerator.

The both scooped because they had no response. I would have taken them both out the next turn.

How do you like the tabletop app? How’s the UI and overall mechanics?

It’s actually pretty damned good! The hiccup is that it doesn’t always identify the cards properly. Lighting issues such as glare on the sleeves, but you can type the card name in and it’ll display it for you.

That’s awesome. I don’t have time to check it out any time soon but I’d love to someday.

Now that I’m back to my computer, I can type out a better response.

SpellTable is actually pretty badass. You can sign in using your MTG Arena credentials because it’s owned/operated by WotC.

What is probably the most difficult part is the camera setup. I have a webcam attached to a camera tripod, pointing down at my playmat. But the slight angle is probably what causes the glare on my card sleeves. That’s likely the same scenario for the other folks who are playing.

Basically, you can go to the “Lobby” to find an open game to join, create your own open game for others to join, or you can create/join a private game so it’s just you and your friends.

One note, you have to make your camera’s aspect ratio adjustments prior to joining the match, but that’s fairly simple b/c if you fuck up, you can exit and come right back. (i.e. - switch to wide-screen ratio).

For Commander, you can enter your Commander’s name so it’s name is displayed right below yours. Your opponents can click on it at any time to re-read your card. Also, you can click on any card on the battlefield for it to display in the right-hand column. That way you aren’t constantly asking your opponent’s to reread their cards to you, or have them hold it up closer to the camera so you can read it yourself.

The game also has the built in life counter display.

I’m sure there are some other nifty tools or gadgets that we simply haven’t explored, but that’s the gist of it. It’s still on the players themselves to know the rules and follow them. But it’s such a great way to get in some paper Magic matches when you struggle to coordinate in-person game nights.

Saw these on woot. No clue about this stuff, just sharing.

Thanks! Appreciated!

Such a bullshit deck. Treasure Hunt + Thassa’s Oracle = Insta-win

I think all the insta-win cards are stupid. They’re all a coin flip. Even when you win, that’s not much fun for anyone.

I added ONE land to my deck the other night and got about fifteen lands in a row. That kind of trash happens too often to be a coincidence. Adding or removing one land and getting all or no lands for ten plus cards the very next game. Like the janky matchmaking we talked about their algorithm clearly tries to put you against decks that make for a fun matchup but it routinely falls on its face.

It feels so good when your deck does EXACTLY what it’s designed to do!

This drives me crazy. You add a card or two to the deck, you’re almost GUARENTEED to have that/those cards in your next opening draw. I mean, that’s cool and all because you added the card and want to see it in action, but its a bit to coincidental, amirite?
