New details have emerged regarding the allegations against Zuffa Boxing super middleweight Edgar Berlanga following his arrest in Florida.
Berlanga was arrested Monday by the Lakeland Police Department and charged with one count of first-degree misdemeanor domestic battery and one count of second-degree felony aggravated battery involving a deadly weapon.
The charges stem from an alleged Oct. 18 altercation with Genesis Maria Calderon, who is identified in a sworn police complaint affidavit as the mother of Berlanga’s child.
According to the affidavit obtained by TMZ Sports, Calderon told investigators that she and Berlanga were traveling in a vehicle when an argument began. Calderon alleged that Berlanga struck her multiple times with an open hand before removing a pistol from a cupholder and hitting her in the forehead with the magazine well of the firearm.
Calderon told police that she attempted to exit the vehicle, but Berlanga allegedly grabbed her left arm and attempted to pull her back inside. She eventually escaped and ran toward a nearby 7-Eleven, where bystanders contacted law enforcement.
Berlanga appeared before a judge by video Tuesday. His bail was set at a combined $16,000, and his arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 17.
Neither Berlanga nor Zuffa Boxing has publicly addressed the allegations as of this writing.
