I still remember the days on the old UG when ‘‘highly esteemed intellectuals’’ kept telling us over and over that Boxing was dead and that the sport was being swallowed by MMA.
No matter what evidence was presented to the contrary the leaders of MENSA kept insisting that us Boxing fans were delusional and by the 2020’s the sport will be completely irrelevant and that MMA will be the undisputed King of combat sports.
Yet somehow there were 96,000 people in attendance to watch Joshua vs Dubois last in the now dead sport of Boxing
Would of any of these Einstein geniuses who kept parroting Dana White and Joe Rogan care to explain why it is that Boxing is still so popular?
Would any of you like to go a step further and try to atone for your sins by apologizing for your heresy?
Boxing is never going to “die” or get massively surpassed, but MMA definitely closed the gap pretty damn rapidly to an extent where its pretty much 1a/1b at this point and has been for a while now, MMA is ahead in too many areas to definitively say its no2, but so is boxing.
I do think that the UFC could do a stadium show in the UK too if they were interested, but for some reason they’d rather book tiny arenas and hold the events at like 3am UK time.
Boxing is doing great and has been for several years. There’s room for all kinds of combat sports to thrive. Boxing has a beautiful and storied history and that’s not just going to be replaced or completely forgotten. If you enjoy mma, you should probably check out jiu jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, Karate Combat, BKFC and whatever else is out there. Maybe you like it, maybe it’s not for you. It’s cool to not like something. We have our own preferences and all that, but it’s pretty annoying when people try to talk shit on something like they win some kind of prize for trying to discredit something legitimate other people like.
The original burst of enthusiasm, i believe, could have led to mma overtaking boxing in popularity. However, the niggardly ways of dana and the ufc brass completely destroyed the original goodwill, and now mma is slowly sinking into the mud.
If anything for me MMA has actually dramatically increased my interest in boxing, but it helps that I’m interested in combat sports/martial arts to begin with.
Boxing is just so different from MMA in so many ways and is completely ingrained into American culture, that it’s not going anywhere. And there are some reasons I would prefer watching boxing over MMA. Although not many.
Aside from Connor mcgregor, there is ZERO MMA stars as big as boxing stars
MMA
Connor
Poatan (maybe)
Boxing
canelo
Anthony Joshua
Usyk
Tyson fury
Old man mayweather
Old man pac
Boxing stars are people your mother knows, draws a crowd and can sell out stadiums. No one knows who the champions are in the UFC and Belal Mohammed can pretty much go anywhere unbothered.
looool MMA is definitely the undisputed King of combat sports. That’s not to say boxing is dead or it doesn’t have a big night here and there, but it’s definitely not on the same level in general. UFC gets billion dollar deals. Boxing was dropped from the only remaining platform heavily dedicated to it (Showtime) less than a year ago.
They are both completely irrelevant sports. “Your mother” can’t name an active competitor in either. I just asked my daughter and she said, “oh the one that died”, “Mohammed Ali?” I said. “Yeah, that guy”.
I used to be a huge fan of both but
I really don’t want h either anymore outside of really big fights. The next one I may watch is Tyson v Paul. That’s a big maybe.
