Serra: Rodrigo Gracie's Fight Against BJ Penn

I remember when I came down to Hawaii to compete at a BJJ tournament and it was one of Enson’s students against Relson’s student. The atmosphere was incredibly hostile, the rivalry between the Inoues and Gracies was hostile to the point I was surprised there wasn’t a riot. When Relson’s student won, everyone on their side was shouting and pumping their fists in the air like they just won a Superbowl.
I can just imagine this was 10x that.

I was in that world in 93-96. Locals don’t need a reason to fight anyway. This was a good one!

Fuck man, it was tribal. I had Millwall vibes in there, you could literally feel the hostility in there.

Love this place

Did you go the the first few FutureBrawls at Gussie’s down under the freeway by the airport? They were literally letting people in the crowds get in the “ring” and get at it. Both Grappling Unlimited and Relson teams in the crowd seething . I think there was a rule on our (Relson) team that it was purple and above to fight.

Good times good times

Yeah, and on an unfortunate note, A mate of mine actually fought a Vegas fighter at Gussies and we heard that the Vegas fighter passed away. We don’t know if it’s true or not but that was the last time he fought.

I didn’t know there were any fighters except local ones at those first few events. Kawika Paaluhi won the first two I think and then JR Palmer won the rest before it went to the Blaisdell?! I’m old as fuck I don’t remember

That sucks about the Vegas guy. Yikes

Serra fought BJ like a total coward, Chris Lytle too. Why fight if you are just going to hold them on the cage?
