Spider Firing Back

Anderson Silva has no issues with UFC CEO Dana White.

Silva once ruled the UFC’s middleweight division and was considered to be the best fighter in the world during his prime. “The Spider’s” relationship with White wasn’t always perfect, as the UFC boss criticized Silva’s performances when he felt it was warranted. Silva also had a rather unceremonious exit from the company despite his legendary status.

During a press conference hyping up his boxing match with Tyron Woodley on the Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua card, Silva made it clear that he never took things personal (via MMAJunkie).

“A lot of people talk bad about Dana, but he’s a businessman,” Silva said. “He stayed in the business for many, many years. It’s tough to say something bad or good about Dana because it’s only about business. It’s numbers. Numbers don’t lie. When you don’t make the same numbers, why I keep you here? Dana is Dana. He’s a boss.”

When asked about White dabbling into the world of boxing promotion, “The Spider” said it’s a different beast than MMA.

“I think it’s a different sport,” Silva said. “I don’t like to talk about that because the people think I’m not respecting Dana or disrespecting somebody. But I believe boxing is a different sport, and it’s a very old sport, and a lot of people in this sport need respect. It’s not about how much money you have to put on the best fights together, but tradition and respect.”

With UFC CEO Dana White getting into boxing, you’d think it might make sense for Silva to link back up with his old boss. But Anderson revealed that he hasn’t spoken to the ‘all business’ White in years and has little interest in leaving Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions.

“No, he hasn’t called me, I don’t talk to Dana for a long, long time,” Silva said. “A lot of people talk bad about Dana, but it’s a business. He’s a businessman. He stay in the business for many, many years. It’s tough to say something bad about Dana, something good. Because it’s only about business. It’s numbers. Numbers don’t lie. When you don’t make the same numbers, why I keep you here? Dana, he’s a boss.”

Not anymore. He knows what could happen.

Other than beating the fuck out of people, Anderson never seemed to take anything all that seriously.

Anderson got the biggest payout of all with the settlement of the UFC class action. Dude pocketed $10m because of the time frame the lawsuit covered. (a contract he signed while on top but covered his long losing streak at the end)

He feels no beef toward Dana. How Dana feels though?

He was a prissy boy who took himself too seriously sometimes.

He ruined a PPV main event because he was butthurt that Maia said he would take an arm. Getting pissed because a BJJer said they would take your arm is taking shit too seriously imo lol.

Unless it was just an excuse for being afraid to engage. :man_shrugging:

He was afraid of lots of guys. That’s why he always refused fights, and tried to demand easier opponents.

“Weidman doesn’t deserve to fight me! It should be Cung Le!”

^Real quote, lol.

Even Dana was shitting on him for it.

“Everytime there’s a fight to make, he wants fucking Mighty Mouse!”

Also why he turned on Wandy and called his “friend’s” opponent with tips when Wand first dropped weight.

Also…hero worship is for lesser men. Fighters feel fear too.

“You’ve got to treat it with respect” by fighting a youtuber, a criminal, Tito and a guy that got KO’d by said youtuber

Silva never bit on grapplers who would pretend they wanted to strike by bouncing around without actually doing anything. It’s on the challenger to make it a fight. Here is Maia reflecting on it many years later:

”I think the training was wrong for that fight because we were training a strategy to wait for him to come to shoot and put him down. But with Anderson, and Chael (Sonnen) proved that later, you gotta chase him, you know? You gotta throw overhands and crazy stuff. If you wanna be technical with him standing, he’s always much more technical than you, at least than me and 99 percent of the guys, so you can’t be so technical standing with him. You can’t be orthodox. I was trying to keep the distance, jab and go away, but he was just hitting me so hard with his jabs.”

I assume ‘wait for him to come to shoot’ is some wobbly English and he means come into range and attack with strikes, because I don’t think Maia actually means he expected Silva to be shooting takedowns.

But him reflecting back, he knows he went in there with a dumb strategy.

Anderson knows better. Life is better when you’re on the boss’s good side.

Because Dana thinks he’s the star of the UFC, not the actual fighters. He does this to everyone.

Never fight injured/sick/compromised, especially in the UFC. Dana will undermine you in the media the moment he has a chance, no matter the circumstances.

Maybe he meant he was waiting for Silva to come into shooting range
