GSP was the champ. Matt Serra was fresh off the Ultimate Fighter. He knocked Georges out in round 1. Nothing can ever top that

The group I was with were all laughing prior to the GSP/Serra fight, saying it was a foregone conclusion, etc…. Saying the fight was a complete joke. How it was garbage that winning a TV reality show got you a championship fight, etc…

Mo Smith v Coleman was huge at the time. Now the odds would be much closer but at the time GnP was king against strikers and everyone was picking Coleman. It was a weird triad at the time
BJJ guys could beat Shootfighters but had a bitch of a time beating wrestlers. Wrestlers had a decent record against BJJ but struggled against Shootfighters. . Shootfighters had a rough go against BJJ. I use the term shootfighters because that was the term back in the day.
Shootfighters tended to have the athleticism combined with submissions to give wrestlers fits.
Wrestlers were usually the strongest of the bunch and just pinned and grounded and pounded BJJ guys in their guards.
BJJ’s hierarchy of positions usually made them more tactically-minded than shootfighters and would nullify their submissions via superior positioning.
