Thanks man! Got it from an article I’m having translated, which covers the Machado school visit. From this magazine:
Kakutougi Tsuushin (roughly translated to Martial Arts Communication, I think) issue number 120
Interestingly enough, that same magazine seems to cover Yoshinori Nishi (Rickson’s first round opponent in the JOVT 1994) visiting the Machado school, also.
Wow! What an amazing find. I bet once this is translated it will be a great read - I’m sure this will also help with your research on the book project. Love Kimo & Joe Son on the cover! This has to be a rarity. I’d love to hear more about everyone’s account on how these training sessions at the Machado’s went. I’ve only ever heard Ken’s account who says the sessions were for learning purposes and that he & Funaki were not there to try and compete, but they were there to see how jiu-jitsu worked in comparison to shootfighting. I’d be curious to know how they did with leg attacks against the Machado’s in these sessions. Thanks so much for sharing!
No problem, man. You can get all these at Toudoukan, online.
Search my first interview with Masa Funaki–I ask him about going to the Machado school, also. He has a little bit of a different take than Ken did IIRC.
Good stuff.
I will absolutely check this out! Thanks for directing me on where to go. I look forward to reading your first interview with Funaki!
I remember in Ken’s interview with @MMAHistoryPodcast he says Funaki may have been a bit upset with one of the Machado’s for using his t-shirt as a weapon during the sessions. Similar to the way a gi is used in various ways to choke an opponent in gi jiu-jitsu. I look forward to giving your interview with Funaki a read! Thanks again!
