UFC 7 (Ruas)

ruas was 1 of the first 3 dimentional fighters who knew to take a kickboxer down, but make a grappler stand

tank knew that too

awesome

Ruas did surprisingly poorly against his first opponent.

That version of the Polar Bear would beat a lot of modern heavyweights still.

I still hate that we didn’t get Ruas v Frye at UFC 11. The two pioneers of well rounded fighters.

Supposedly the Japanese called him ā€œDinosaur Handsā€ because he has big fists and thick fingers. Also has big feet.

I’m guessing that means he has an OG sized hawg too, so yeah, he’s probably destroyed a ton of Brazilian punani

I got excited as fuck about Marco Ruas because if I recall he was the first to show actual striking skills while still being able to out-grapple anyone.

It always boggled my mind how none of the TMAs had any answer for grappling whatsoever once they got into the cage.

Before the UFC, no one even looked at wrestlers as legit fighters. It was just a sport.

Hmm structuring it to build Ruas up..? That’s possible as I think Art Davie was the match maker back then and he was pretty sharp .. I wish a strong wrestler would have been put in this tournament - someone like Dave Beneteau .. I remember Igor Vovchanchin was supposed to fight at ufc 10 I think - throwing him
In at ufc 7 would have been interesting

Varelans was huge and beyond tough but had very little skill. Even towards the end of his mma career he still was so goofy or lackluster in the cage RIP

That ā€œsuper fightā€ was pretty awful

Yep that’s the fight I still think about - that would have been such a great fight .. hard to pick a winner but I’d lean towards Frye as he was more durable and had the wrestling to defend takedowns

I fell asleep during the shamrock fight. Good thing I recorded it and watched the finals in the morning
