Vernon White Kicks Minoru Suzuki

I’m going through some old fights and I noticed something. In White vs. Suzuki 1, Vernon throws a light front kick to the area just below Suzuki’s knee. Suzuki “checks” it by lifting his leg. But it’s a very light kick. This is around 1:40. At around 2:20, Vernon throws what looks like a spinning back kick to me, but instead of targeting the head or abdomen, it lands below Suzuki’s knee. He throws more kicks similar to this during the fight. I’m sure “oblique kicks” were being used before this, but perhaps this is the first example of one being used in a broadcasted fight? I guess it wouldn’t be called “oblique” because the first kick has a vertical angle, while the other has a completely horizontal angle. But still targeting the area the oblique kick does. I know White has a Taekwondo background, but I’m not familiar with kicks like this in Taekwondo. Interesting.

Vernon was my karate teacher around this time. He actually taught me a technique I used to win a fight in my late teens.

What was the technique?

One of my first buys on an xbox was his fight with chuck to show my friends haha…

Nice!

Hand web to the throat. Lol. Two guys tried to jump me in a Mcdonald’s because they were tweaking and thought I was someone else. They came up and started talking shit and then just swung on me. I grabbed a tool they used to push the trash down in the trash can and hit the first dude in the ribs with it, then squared up with the second guy and he came at me with both fists out and his head up. For some reason it popped into my head and I handwebbed him and it worked really well. He grabbed his throat and started coughing and I kicked him square in the nuts. Him and who ended up being his cousin ran across the street and hid behing a gas station, and were eventually caught by the cops while I was giving my statement.

This is the exact type of tool I hit the dude with.

Bad ass

Vernon White was a complete bad ass and another who has a deceptive record, dude comes up in TMA and gets thrown into the deep end of Pancrase immediately. He always came to fight regardless of the challenge, and was a legit kickboxer.

Okay wait

So this tool was sitting nearby outside of the trash can? If so, perfect coincidence

What were the mechanics of it, sort of a thrust forward like using a spear? Also do you have any familiarity with the kicks he used in the video up there against Suzuki? He used them in other fights as well

You can DM me if it’s too much for the thread, but I’m sure others would love to read it

So I was inside waiting for my order chatting up a chick I had been trying to get with(who noped the fuck out and I never talked to again. Fuck those guys again for that), and the trash can was a few feet from me with that thing sitting right next to it. 100% perfect coincidence. When they swung at me at the same time I rolled out of the way towards the tool and came up with it like Yoshimitsu in Tekken.

They looked at each other and then one rushed me and when I swung he put his hand up to block(lol) and I sunk it deep into his rib cage. I let it go when he wrapped it up and he cousin came at me like Frankenstein

And for some reason in that moment I remembered the hand web and landed it. The mechanics are to take a very karate stance. Lead leg out, non dominant had way out, hand open by your face. Then push off with your back leg, bring your non dom up to your face, rotate your hips and strike quickly with the hand web to the throat.

And actually yeah about the kicks. We did a lot of spinning back kicks and back leg head kicks, with some lead leg leg and midsection kicks. Snapping them quick. Our school was founded by Joe Corley who actually fought Chuck Norris in a full contact fight. It’s American karate and is about as legit as you can get when it comes to karate. We were definitely taught to strike for a reason, and not just make contact for point fighting.

I was standing where that wall is and it was still just a counter. The guys came in through this POV

And the tool was right next to this trash can in that corner.

always one of my favs in early MMA

one of the most creative fighters in sport at the time

the details are hazy since it was so long ago but i distinctly remember tiger repeatedly bashing a dude’s face with shoulder (!) strikes because the opponent had his hands tied up

Sorry I keep going, but I’m bored at work.

This is it, but ours more wide with the lead hand out further.

Hell yeah. Shout out to Joe Corley, who’s still promoting.
