Was Ken Shamrock the king of leg locks in his prime?

The subject is Shamrock leg locks.
I posted footage of a Shamrock leg lock seminar.

What’s with the attitude?

Ruas would have whipped Ken’s ass had they fought.

Even though that wouldn’t fly as high level leg locks today, you can tell Ken has a decent understanding of heel exposure and the ankle-knee-hip line and it’s importantance. That’s something BJJ wouldn’t figure out until basically 2013.

Just saying he wasn’t showing any ground breaking stuff there.

Bro Ruas is a legend…but Ruas got whooped by the Diet Butcher.

Ken would have tapped him prime vs prime. He’s orders of magnitude stronger than Marco.

Define ground breaking. In 1993 if you knew that shit you’d be in the top .01% of grappling in terms of leg lock knowledge. Particularly in North America.

Funaki and Suzuki were doing shit so far beyond the leg locks that Gotch and Robinson were doing it’s not funny. All the shooto lineage guys were.

Not likely.

Ruas wouldn’t have been able to stop the takedown.

Wish it would have happened regardless.

Here’s a longer one.

I only watched a couple minutes after fast forwarding through the warmups. Might be some good stuff…who knows?
It’s applicable to the thread subject.

Not saying Ken is Dean Lister. But we’re talking about the 90s. Also, Ken generally fought at a higher level than guys who would have been considered technically better in that era.

.

His knee bah on rutten was a thing of beauty.

It was my go to from top half guard when I used to train and wasn’t an old decrepit fuck.

Who knows whether that was even a legit fight or not but Ken was definitely ahead of his time when it came to grappling even though he got submitted in less than a minute by a 170lber.

We do.

Royce submitted everyone he fought up until the second Ken fight.

So was Royce awesome or did he suck?

Can’t have it both ways.

Just saying that his grappling was good but it certainly wasn’t the best. If Ken hadn’t been a steroid monster Royce would have mauled him like a pitbull in the rematch.

Thread is specifically about leg submissions.

Totally sounds like Royce’s style lol.

Yeah i give Ken credit for landing one punch on Royce during that fight which was all he talked about in his book. “That punch” lol.

Ken has 3 books but I’m guessing you’re talking about the first one.

The visible damage to Royce’s face is from more than just the punch.
In the OT period Ken was high in Royce’s guard grinding on him with cross face, short punches, and even a couple headbutts.

Boring fight for sure, although I found it interesting at the time.
But in the OT period alone Ken was more aggressive and Royce didn’t have anything for him.

Wasn’t the OT when Ken landed that punch? Regardless he did rough Royce up pretty good. Ken was a good fighter but he should have retired around 2000 instead of just showing up to get paychecks and hurting his legacy. He was 1-7 after that.

there was never a rule to stand fighters up. They jsut decided to stand them up because the fight was so damn boring. That was when Ken caught Royce
