Who had the best ground and pound of all time? And is it a lost art?

That Brandon Vera broken orbital. Hamill until the illegal strike. Putting it on a past his prime Matuyshenko.

Don’t forget Shogun. A lot of the damage done in that fight was gnp

Bring back headbutts and ground and pound would be alive and well.

I don’t care what anyone says, this was the most fun to watch.

Young Coleman when headbutts were allowed was a problem.

It’s a travesty that Big Daddy vs Tank never happened. I know it was signed and Tank pulled out at the last second.

You’ll never guess how Cecil peoples scored that round.

I don’t know if they are the best, but before Rampage became a knockout artist he said his favorite way to win was to maul someone on the ground like a grizzly bear. Frankie Edger had some vicious G&P once he went down to the lower weight classes.

I think BJJ has done a disservice to MMA. The instructors want to push their cult beliefs so bad instead of looking at the evidence. I think G&P is generally a better option from top positions than submissions. The best ground fighter in the UFC utilized G&P instead of submission hunting. That’s why you don’t see would class BJJ doing well anymore. It’s a less effective option.

Yes those crazy hammer fists too. I came to say him. Most guys throw shots on the ground like they are sparring or hitting a heavy bag on the ground in practice. More focused on the PSSH sound than actually trying to MURDER a motherfucker

Yeah besides if you think about it, at a bare minimum you are creating pain which creates something your opponent has to defend or think about. It causes them to make mistakes and opens up opportunities for submissions. You just have to train that way. It’s like when you’re rolling and your buddy has a kimura on you so you go to defend and he goes knee on belly, which causes you to maybe forget about your arm for a second, then bingo, tap.

People also rarely ground and pound the body. That’s a huge, mostly stationary target that you can just pound on with maximum force. Either with your fists/arms or knees.

No one in guard every ground and pounds the body. The only time I’ve ever seen it happen purposely was when Overeem fought Mir. Overeem was in Mir’s guard dropping elbows to Mir’s mid-section.

Don’t even get me started on Topuria/Gaethje, lol.

If you’re falling for armbars when you can ground and pound, you deserve to lose.

Amar Suleov and Travis Lutter come to mind.

There’s glory tied to winning a fight via KO or submission. There a monetary bonus tied to those finishes as well. I don’t think there’s any bonus tied to a GnP finish. Maybe there should be one?!?!

Doesn’t it still count since it’s a TKO?

Apparently they don’t have KO or Submission of the night bonuses anymore. Just a finishing bonus or a performance/fight of the night bonus.

Agreed. You’re causing pain, enticing panic, scoring points in the judges eyes, and not risking losing the position. A failed submission is usually worse than not going for it at all. It usually doesn’t require more effort to defend than it takes to apply and gives the guy on bottom a chance to rest. If you’re being punch you almost are force to try to get out of the position or risk the fight being stopped. It appears to be a much better option.
