Who's your favorite boxer of all time?

I was trying to explain his footwork to our youngest in the car the other day.

Definitely do not try to mimick him while driving lol.

Another one of my favorites to watch was Emanuel Augustus. He was brought in to lose a lot of times and played the spoiler.

I see that I’m late to the thread and my answer of Hagler has been said multiple times already. Men of good taste around here.

Same but when I found out he had more coke in his system than Scareface did when he fought arguello, I had enough of him.

Whitiker, Hagler,Jones.
And fighters I always made sure to watch. Ward, Tua, Manfredy, Tapia, Gatti, Vargas, Paz.
I wish I watched boxing like I used too. I can’t even keep up with the revolving 1000 fighters in the UFC.

Fair I hear you, we don’t know what was in the bottle still but something was up. Panama Lewis is a certified scumbag. Pryor did win the rematch as well, he didn’t need whatever was in that water bottle.

Growing up and training I loved De La Hoya

His jab was amazing and he fought in a Superfight which I felt he lost against Trinidad

It didn’t deter me from being a fan because it was close

Paul Spadafora: tough as nails with crazy output. Stayed in the pocket, bobbing and weaving while eating shots. Mickey Ward-esque

The angles, the speed, the power, the coke.

On the right night I think he beats anybody at 140.

………and the smelling salts and Panama Lewis’ ā€œspecially mixed bottleā€.

Why and how THE FUCK did we get denied Pryor vs Duran or Pryor vs Leonard?!?

I was rooting hard for Tito in that fight but Oscar clearly won. That was bullshit.

I remember thinking different but, maybe I’m wrong

I felt Trinidad had more impact

Boxing is scored by rounds and Oscar had a huge lead, even if he ran the last 2.5 rounds. He clearly won all the early rounds. Trinidad did not fight his best that night.

Oscar CLEARLY won that fight. He was stupid to essentially run at the end, but he clearly won. That was between a horrible decision and a pure robbery. Just bad, bad bad.

But, Oscar did get some very arguable gifts in his career - Whitaker, Quartey if I remember correctly.

Still, DLH beat Trinidaddy, no doubt about it.

Ha! Buddie knows even more than me, listen to him!

Hey Buddie, who did you have winning the Hagler - SRL fight? Any particular thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Hagler wanted this fight so bad, he just agreed to anything leonards limp wristed team required. They did not want a straight up, normal, championship boxing match. they wanted to tip the scales in their direction every possible way. Can I blame them, no. Do I respect it as 2 guys trying to prove who is the best, nope.

  1. Less rounds than standard: Championship fights were always 15 rounds. All of Hagler’s previous were. Leonard knew he would never be in as good of shape as Hagler so he would only agree to 12 rounds. Hagler’s camp should have just said, ā€œnope, this is a championship fight so no special rules for anyoneā€.

  2. Ring Size: From what I understand, 18’ rings or even 16’ were the most common sizes in the 80s. The max size allowed was 20’ and it was not common. Leonard would only fight in the biggest size allowed so they got a 20’ ring. it’s almost 25% more space to run away.

  3. Glove Size: standard was 8oz gloves. Leonard would only fight if they agreed to 10oz.

Hagler even agreed to less money, even though he was the champ. He just wanted the fight so bad. All of this was a loss.

In my opinion and that of a lot of smart boxing people, Hagler won this fight regardless of what the scorecards were. This was the biggest boxing match and biggest sporting event of all time back then. If you were old enough to remember than you know what I’m talking about. It was massive. Before that, the biggest event ever was not the superbowl, it was Cooney-Holmes but this one eclipsed that. If anyone thinks that the Mob was not somehow influencing this fight, you might be interested in buying a bridge someday. There are even rumors of why Hagler took off to Italy right after.

In the end, phizer/moderna killed Hagler.
