I remember watching Chuck Norris’ World Karate Combat League or whatever it was called on TV way back in the day. It was interesting as they would bring in boxers and other combat sports to compete. I remember they had IIRC Alex Karalexis from season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter on there get knocked out. I believe they only had the show on for 1 season.
I remember watching an old K1 card live (i think) whilst abroad in Thailand. There was no subtitles but a lot of people seemed to be really into it! Was a few HW bouts back to back.
Was much more entertaining than watching those boxing cards where each bout goes teh distance!
PKA stuff back in the day was weak because you had to kick above the waist and were penalized if you didn’t throw a certain amount of kicks a round. That rule really cost the boxers a lot and deterred more from doing it.
Close friend of mine is a big karate champ and was invited on there. Someone knocked him out stone fucking cold as if an assassin was in the rafters & picked him off first.
I remember that, there were ringside officials who counted the kicks of each fighter, with the count shown on the screen. It made for a boring fight since the fighters made sure to kick enough early to make sure they got their count.
I remember watching the cheesy kickboxing in the 80’s where I think you could only throw round house kicks. It was either that, point fighting, or kyushukin karate, where you couldn’t throw punches to the head. The 70’s style looks way more badass, unless I am misremembering what I watched.
Random fact: As a kid I went undefeated in YMCA point karate, 40-0
