Absolute legend, funny to see him legit almost speechless, lol:
Congrats
Time passes.
I watched the The Contenders wrestling vs grappling John Perritti show with one of those fellas getting the Coral Belt in the video.
Small group of us watching in PPV, maybe 5 or 6 people.
Damn that was a long time ago and we all get “older”
Awesome dude and a true old school pioneer. Well deserved.
I didn’t realise he got his black belt so early. My teacher doesn’t even have his coral yet and he’s a Carlson Sr black belt promoted in 1997. I think this means Paulson got his in 95. That’s really impressive
That’s a real coral belt factory Rigan’s running over there.
Make Kesa Gatame Great Again!
Speaking in general terms here so I may be off base.
But I would imagine at the point of 95 vs 97 black belt just depends on who you are affiliated with and who is in contact and who is awarding the belts. Vs a formula or exact path.
you’re probably right but technically the promotion is ONLY supposed to be grade in time. It’s 31 years from the day you get your black belt (3+3+3+5+5+5+7)
I believe this is why when Rickson was prematurely promoted to red belt, he refused to wear it. Because it was done as a gesture among family instead of time in grade - the only way you’re supposed to get your red belt.
Great fight between 2 pioneers and legends of the sport. Makes you feel very old when you see them now.
I might stick around for a coral belt too.
Erik taught me how to do some chiropractic adjustments lol. He felt that giving minor adjustments to your training partner was beneficial part of a good warm up routine.
After seeing him get his belt I actually feel pretty young.
He is only 3 years older than I am but looks like he’s in his mid 70’s
Lifetimes of hard work being recognized here. Incredible. Utmost respect for all of these men.
Just curious for any BJJ guys here, have you ever rolled with a coral or red belt,? Do they still have it or at that point is it all politics and your circle of influence?
I have not, but most coral belts are pretty old. I think it would be a dick move to try and tap a coral belt.
Minimum age is 60 something isn’t? It probably would be a dick move and I understand those upper belts are really more than just your ability on the mats but just curious if any of these guys can still perform?
I’m sure some are great. The Gracie’s would tie up uppidy young students.
We uses to train in the ga-raatch…lol
