John Weidler's Front Flip Guard pass
In this clip from Rhode Island Vale Tudo 4 in July of 2000, Jon Weidler landed one of the most impressive feats that every happened in an MMA fight.
Nice dude. Do you always go to the ankle pick from there, or just saw it in the moment?
Another fun one was the last roll of today. My partner had probably 40+ pounds on me, a wrestler. He took me down and had me in every bad position imaginable. He ended up taking my back and I defended every choke he attempted. I could feel him slowing down and breathing really heavy, had seen him gas out in other classes.
So I was trying to peel his hook off and figured his legs would blow out. He wasn’t moving but at the last second, with 10 seconds left in the round, he switched the choke side and was so strong he was able to get the choke with that one arm. Insanely strong. I almost made it the entire round without him tapping me…
That is a bad ass technique
huge fanboy moment but Im cooler than the IceMan).
You can see the tapping motion blur of his hand and Din Thomas jumping in to stop it.
*shamelass self plug, and ill tell it again im sure
HBJ In The Crib
Well done man!
I do like the ankle pick, but I didn’t plan on it. I love a sweep single for bjj. This one was just a reaction though. The guy head butt my mouth right at the start. He spazzily bull rushed me so it took me a second to get my bearings. I just circled till he opened up.
It’s really interesting. I’m 45 years old. I only wrestled for about 7-8 years when I was a kid. I started bjj at 40. The wrestling muscle memory never left though. It’s very difficult for a non wrestler or non judo guy to take down an old guy who’s wrestled even at a low level. Your body doesn’t forget the balance, weight, pressure, base, and movement. You just get slower and more deliberate. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve rolled with experienced guys who’ve asked me “how long did you wrestle?”
Well now I’m sharing too lol. Just competed at the ibjjf new york open. No one in my masters 4 purple weight class, so I went down to the youngsters’ bracket (under 45 guys lol).
Didn’t do too badly (third place) using my old high school wrestling stand up and old man smash passes. Pretty cool having my kids watch me compete and not get embarrassed.
OP, keep at it! Never too late to start a d me er to old to be humbled. Also, choking fools for fun is so good for the soul.
Youre a lefty? Nice single leg shot!
Congrsts on pushing yourself get out there and congratulations on a hard-earned bronze medal performance!
Nope…I’m cracking up though because I’ve heard that a million times.
I’m a goofy foot. I just always wrestled with my left foot forward and my power foot back like a boxer. Not traditional at all, but I love the left foot forward. It confuses some guys the way a southpaw stance confuses an orthodox guy.
Plus, I like it for my sweep single to that side and I always loved worming my lead left arm over hook in there to set up the lateral drop to the left side. Guys always seemed to think they had the advantage with the underhook. But their legs were wrong when I’m in that stance.

You look very comfortable with that shot. Like , it’s been your bread and butter for a long time. Real nice…
cute crank brah but it aint no airplane spin into a heel hook now is it?!

Are you new in town?
By the way 11 days ago, marked the 25th anniversary of me pulling this off. I had Phil and Gregg DePasqualle in my corner that night.
Cant believe it was 25 years ago.
I hate jiu jitsu so much.
I traned 5 times in the last 3 days and feel like I’ve been in a car wreck.
I wish I could quit this sport.

I’ve met people that agree with you. But I’ve noticed that the overwhelming majority of them share the same traits.
-only do Jiu Jitsu and no other exercise activities
-been training 10+ years
-don’t stretch or do any mobility work
-rarely ever take a week off
-train injured all the time
Do you fall under that category? I can definitely see how this art would wreck your body. It’s important to take care of yourself. I did the same with basketball. Played competitively for 20+ years. Never worked out, never lifted, never did real stretching or mobility work, never took breaks, played injured until my injury was bad enough to keep me from playing.
Injuries accumulated and last year I basically took the entire year off from serious exercise. No running, no training, no lifting. Just yoga, stability, balance, and mobility exercises. Started BJJ and I feel like it has completed the circle of my body feeling like it came from a completely different person. Feel like I did right before I turned 30.
5 times in 3 days is also a lot of training. A couple of weeks ago I did 5 times in 4 days and I felt like a wreck.
I’m just kind of kidding.
It was just a perfect storm of scheduling for me.
Wednesday normal training group.
Thurs nomral training group, then a group of white belts that I teach on the side in the evening.
Friday invite only with a group of good black belts in the AM. Friday afternoon normal training group.
The white belt group was actually extremely rewarding this week.
Its all smaller guys, they’ve been bringing me in once a week to train them for about 4 months.
They have no other grappling experience.
This week another guy came to the session.
Outweighs all of them by 30lbs, great athlete.
All of the guys who had been coming to the sessions were successfully able to keep him pimned, pretty easily.
Showed them this stuff actually works.
my extreme body aches and pains from training went away when I focused on no gi. I did 28 years almost exclusively in the gi. All of the gripping and pulling and struggling…Id be wrecked after a session. Now I feel great. Movement > struggle for your joints and muscles
