Has anyone safely hung a heavy bag in their garage and what materials did you guys use?
I know some guys that did it but having a beam that can support the weight and the movement is the tricky thing.
I have great setup.
Use 44 beams, 8’ 3 beams. Make a U shape config. Hand bag from middle of U.
My bag stand is only screwed to beams vertically, it carries no weight.
Use the beams to carry the weight.
I gave it 4’ feet on each side. I made a ‘roof’ beam that spans the '4 section to the top wall.
Very secure, didn’t screw concrete. Reasonably cheap, durable as hell.
Thank you
I’ll get pics when I can..
But obviously, if you can take the shift off of the house taking the hit and shift weight to the frame (w big ass 4’ feet)…
The impact gets well absorbed. It’s a good cheap setup.
I’m an idiot when it comes to materials etc. I tried googling the beams could you send me links to the beams you mentioned if you don’t mind so I know exactly what to get?
I have this
My garage is retarded and full of shit, I would never try to hang anything in there.
I don’t like stands because I don’t feel like I can get a proper work out in. I like to move around the bag and use foot work.
I fully agree with you, I just don’t really have other options in my garage. I like to move around it too. This kind of sucks but I still use it.
This is my set up (shop is a bit messy at the moment ) and at some point I need to swap the S clips for a swivel and snap links cause I can occasionally kick the bag off the lower S clip.
Just find the middle of a ceiling joist, drill it to the minor thread diameter of a screw eye and thread that bitch in.
And I should add that my set up is dependent on having real wood joists in your ceiling. If you have TJI’s it won’t work.
Horrible pic, but I did this.
It’s an 8’ span. It isn’t too much for the bag. Those Douglas fir beams are like 20-30$. I assembled w some long screws, used metal screw in bracing for joints.
The thing works great. Use it for kicks also. Absolutely could use more room, but this gives 180 degrees freedom out the front. It’s enough.
The legs could be cut back a foot, but I think the feet have totally lead to some stability.
I also cut a diagonal bracing piece between the footer and the upright post on both sides.
Shit pic. But the feet could be cut at 45degree angle, and they could be shorter. That gives space.
I didn’t want to fuck up my house. This setup puts nothing on the house. Been great for years.
Better than nothing at least

You don’t think it’s too low?

Nice i appreciate yours and everyone else’s feedback
It’s off the ground and it’s a muay thai bag so I never thought so. It let’s me work on my ankle kicks (just wait, it’s coming )
Gotcha. Just didn’t know if it effects your punching or not
Does anyone have a better idea than heavy chains? I keep snapping them when my thunderous punches and kicks connect during my power sessions.
Not that I’ve noticed, but… I got used to using them instead of heavy bags so you don’t get the bag moving as much with punches. But that’s the trade off on a thai bag in my experience.

Yes the Thai bag is better for Muay Thai. I agree with that.
