Peak Wandy tends to get a bit underrated here. He was a force of nature, and I think stronger and more powerful than Shogun – while Shogun was more dynamic.

Watched it as it happened bro.
From UFC 1.
I didn’t see every single event live as it happened. But I saw a lot of them as they happened, and was generally able to get a tape or see a replay shortly thereafter.
A few I missed and caught up later.
But I watched the sport evolve in real time.
I consider myself lucky in that.
The evolution of modern NHB/MMA is one of the most interesting aspects of combat sport history IMO.

It definitely does feel that way. You’ve been around the fight game for a long long time. I’m sure I’ll catch hell for saying this but I really enjoyed watching the older shows through yt mostly. The style vs style aspect is gone imo and now it’s pure sport where everyone needs to know the exact same things.

I remember on the old site, there was a guy (I forget his SN at the moment) who was “newer” to the sport – and he made an ongoing thread about him watching all of the Pride events in order.
The comments and discussion on that thread were almost unanimously positive!
I don’t think he ever fully finished it that I saw.
But he was off to a damn good start!
Experiencing the whole of MMA history in chronological order is a daunting task – even if you were to just stick to the main promotions and big name fighters.
Back in the day I used to make highlight tapes to give to people I knew or guys I trained with, to get them more in to the sport.
It took a lot of time.
It’s difficult to show a great fight without prior context. So I would try to build it up so they would see how good certain guys were leading up to the fight I wanted to highlight.
Well, that’s a rabbit hole – because how do you show that the previous performance was impressive – without showing why that opponent who lost was impressive leading up to it?
Takes a lot of time to try and squeeze all that into a 4 hour-ish VHS.

I think if young shogun was around today he could get some impressive wins but also lose to guys like Ulberg, Jiri, Pereira & Rakic etc.
2005 Shogun KO’s them all. That’s crazy to think Jab. Those guys can’t hold a candle to 2003-2005 LHWs.

Let’s be honest, there’s ring/cage IQ and teh fact Shogun is only a weak 6’1 (6’ more like). He is a striker who won fights with aggression!
Today’s LHW’s who are primarily strikers are taller and have more upto date trainers & fight IQ.
This is the Shogun I came to love.

That’s teh thing. Back in 2005 it were like “this fighter has mostly wrestling & some striking” or the other way around. Young Shogun had athleticism in miles and aggression too!
