Tank was built to win those early tournaments. His physical attributes and fighting style allowed to him breeze through the early rounds and remain fresh for the finals.
But Oleg and Don Frye had to cheat with worked fights in the semis to stay fresh versus Tank.
Tank could have very well been the UFC 6 and UU96 winner and his place in NHB/MMA history is completely different.
That’s interesting about Hackney. That should’ve been much more competitive. Wasn’t he training with Shultz? He should’ve been able to sprawl and brawl Royce.

Hard to disagree in a vacuum… That said it is inarguable at this point that the Gracie’s stacked the brackets in Royce’s favor and when Art Davis says that they limited participation by those with strong amateur backgrounds, it gives some credence to Tank’s assertions beyond just his words.
Yoshida easily beat Tank in a fixed fight, snd Royce easily beat Ron Van Clief, so I’d say Royce probably wins

royce was good at gettin to the clinch without gettin punched, as he did with gordeau
tank probably wouldnt get taken down by him, might throw him around, royce would try to take the back standing, tank would wizzer, royce would pull guard and tie him up til tank gassed, then maybe get a gi choke or triangle

but certainly tank has the tools to win with sprawl and brawl, at least for the first 3 minutes. as long as he fights smart. cant count on tank to be smart
Tank was dangerous.
But he lost to pretty much every good fighter he ever faced.
His best wins are a Duarte and a rematch with Cabbage.
Hell, he lost to Scott Ferozzo.
Yeah it’s a dangerous fight for Royce. But just going off of track record, I’d have to pick Royce until I saw otherwise.
