Tank is crazy strong - guy was doing upright rows with 315 pounds .. that combined with his wrestling, killer instinct, bad attitude and punching power made him a huge star in early mma

I think Hackney was just a TMA karate guy that ran a HVAC business. No connection to Schultz or any other big-time wrestler.
Sprawl and brawl would have been obvious to anyone fighting Royce after the first two UFCs.

Iāve listened to him the past few years and I think heās changed his tune on that.
He was an alternate or something in one and maybe was hurt for the other? Talking about 4 and 5 here. But I think heās stopped saying the gracies kept him out.
I like Hugo, but he was not better than Rickson. And if sand had been thrown there most likely would have been a riot, not a story.

Though he did get KOed by Renzo in another event a year or two later.
Tank did go 16 minutes with Oleg.

Thatās an interesting fight.. I have only seen Hugo pummel Harold Howard and a few other scrubs and lose to Tank and Kerr.. he was a pretty aggressive and athletic big guy with good grappling though so heād give Royce a tough fight

UU96 was such a disappointment overall.. Iām not sure if folks remember but Mark Coleman and Vitor Belfort were signed to fight in this tourney against each other in the first round! Yes, Belfort was expected to make his ufc debut against Mark Coleman but both fighters got hurt and that really hurt the tournament.. then u had Shamrock getting hurt after the first round do that fucked the Tank fight up.. instead of getting Frye/Kimo and Tank/Shamrock we got a crap fight with Frye/hall and Tank//Nelmark.. ugh

Hackney was training with Mark Schultz for ufc 4? I didnāt know that but even if true, Royce was crafty and he wore that gi because he wanted fighters to grab it and thatās exactly what Keith did.. that said, Keith put up a good fight and showed a chink in Royceās armor .. itās too bad Shamrock fought like he did in the ufc 5 super fight as I wanted to see Royce go on to fight guys like Oleg and Ruas ..

Thereās so much bs around the first few ufcs in terms of who was invited and who was intentionally avoided .. I do believe art Davie invited boxers like Tyson and Holyfield and think he even invited Alexander Karelin .. he did not seem interested in getting other bjj type fighters besides Royce though and I get his reasoning ā the clash of styles was what made the events interestingā having half the bracket stacked with bjj black belts wouldnāt be as sexy

Keith wrestled and trained in boxing, then got into TMA and started training jujutsu (non-Brazillian) before he got into the UFC.
I almost trained at his school 25-30 years ago but it was out of my way

I did not know that as from the looks of it, Keith didnāt seem to have much wrestling experience at all in his fights.. I remember Joe Son body locking him quite easily to the ground ..
I like Keith though and met him a few years back - the guy had massive shoulders and back .. Guy was jacked and I wanted to see him fight guys like Patrick Smith back in the day
Keith Hackney vs Pat Smith is one of the fights I wish happened most from that era.
