It truly is a world class fishery. Someone caught a 6.75lb smallie in a tournament today. The difference with the french is all the deep water, it adds another element to deal with while looking for fish. The main lake has a million humps and rock piles which can all hold fish.
Dc has something like 3000 waypoints on the main lake. If you havent, you need to talk to him about his log. He was telling me that on the 5th day after the full moon or whatever it was, he has always been skunked and believed it was the worst day to fish relative to moon cycle. Smart guy and really interesting
He really is. I fished with him in my buddies boat. DC brought his own graph with him and a battery to hook it up to. I got to see his waypoint methods. Its insanity. The way he did his waypoint system actually influenced how Lowrance started making the more modern units.
I fished with him and we hit spots Ive never seen anyone hit on Nip. We got skunked all day then on the way in there was this lone tiny hump in the middle of an abyss and he said ‘lets just drive over that and put the lures in the water and troll over it’. We got the lures down and right when we went over that hump the rod started screaming. Was a great day
Got back yesterday from a week of fishing near Red Lake Ontario Canada. Took a float plane to the island that has about a dozen cabins AND no cell phone connection and very very limited Starlink connection. Caught tons of walleye and northern. My tally was 19 northern over 30 inches but the biggest was only 36 but fat. Others in my group caught about a dozen 40-42 inches. Walleyes caught was as many as you felt like cooking for dinner and bringing back. Great time!
Glad everything worked out with the motor. Too bad about not catching any walleyes, i’m sure you were looking forward to eating some. I’ve seen a few caught on topwater over the years hut it’s pretty rare. Looks like the boys had a good time, cant ask for much more.
Senkos are the only thing I found that were actually “on sale”. At least as far as baits that I was interested in. Lots of baits that were listed as deals, but their “sale” prices are no different than every day prices. In some cases actually higher. I don’t really care for Senkos, but for $3/bag I bought several.
I think they have the best action of any stick bait. But I average less than a fish per bait. They rip on the hookset, so every bite ruins a bait whether the fish is caught or not. And at $8/bag it’s just not worth it. I’ve tried lots of others, and most don’t come close to the wiggle of the Senko, there’s no denying that. But I’ve settled on the Strike King Shim E Stick, its action is nearly as good as the Senko, but durable enough to last through a hookset.
He holds onto em really well going through fish and snags. He puts the O ring on em so maybe that helps. I don’t seem to have the same ratio but don’t use it nearly as much either
Took the family on a camping trip this week in the Adirondacks. We had to take a boat to the campsite. We brought no tent this year, just slept in the lean to. Kids absolutely loved it. No match campfires too!
thats awesome man, a great area I bet you guys had a total blast. So many fish up there.
I fly to thunder bay Monday with a 5 hour drive to Lac Seul. Im pumped. My buddy owns a tackle company and sent me a new rod and a prototype reel to test. I cant wait.
The water in so many parts of Ontario right now, esp southern is so hot that I dont want to fish for muskie so heading way up north is a perfect solution.
