Suboptimal start of the day, but ended well.
Interesting hour long battle since I got it on a salmon rod while mooching for silvers. 143#
Trouble hooks
We just wrap some line around the bottom, put some pressure on the shank to give the barb some room, and pop them out. Easy peasy.
Just makes it worse because a couple weeks ago when we had a buddy out with us who is new to fishing, and we were constantly on him to use pliers unless he also wanted to learn the quick / easy way to remove hooks from someoneâŚâŚ then what does my dumb ass do right out the gates on the first fish of the day
Was funny, we had a 9 year old on the boat who asked me âdoesnât that hurt your finger?â
Answered him âBuddy it happens, and no biggie, I got 9 more. Besides, while it certainly doesnât feel good, it definitely doesnât hurt as much as having to hear about this for the next 20-30 years.â
Iâve seen that trick before too. Havenât had to try it yetâŚ
Same here, saw it but never tried it. Saw a new hook removal tool at icast, iâll see if i can find it
Hell yeah, Merle!
Those halibut trip me out. Iâve never been around one but they look like big flounder. Do they every come shallow where you can gig them like a flounder?
I can see where the tool would be handy (no pun intended) if you were by yourself, and the hook was in your hand and in a position where it was hard to put the pressure on the shank to disengage the barb. But using the fishing line method is super simple, and no need for another tool to carry around. Weâve done it a number of times now, and works much better than the old dumb way we used to by cutting it and pushing it thru.
