Toupee blew it in the second round

JMHO, I don’t see how Toupee beats him regardless. Justin is way the fuck bigger than him, hits just as hard, and his face is made of granite. Justin beats that ass 5/5 times.

If he fights smarter for five rounds and don’t rush and pick his shots. I think he could’ve won

Yeah. I honestly thought Oliveira would crack him. He sort of did, but also fought too stupidly to capitalize on it.

Why would you bring in an inexperienced doctor for this event? Makes no sense lol.

They clearly have the budget to bring in a top-level ring doctor.

I’m not sure they pick the individual Dr.s. They should have for this event, and I could certainly be wrong. But I thought the UFC hired an agency to staff the events, and they determined the Dr.s covering.

His right eye looked fucked after round 1.

He ate so many stiff jabs in round 1.

I don’t think he hits just as hard. He just lands a lot more. Still hard shots but Gaethje beats you with volume he’s not 1 punch ko’ing anyone.

Do we know the extent of ilia’s injuries yet? He has to have at least one badly broken orbital?

Amazing Justin had just no face damage at all. Has he ever been badly busted up? Even when he goes to sleep he ends up fine after. Kind of crazy.

Ilia botched it in the 2nd as noted. Make him stand back up and finish that liver.

I thought Gaethje was fucked up about 6 times after a loud punches landed in exchanges.

Each time he then flashed this exact face and was just fine.

The fight I want to see next is Gaethje vs Ruffy.

Ruffy is huge at this weight unlike Ilia.

Arman is not deserving of a belt. A guy who takes and injury because he can’t make weight for a title shot then has his dad hire him a social media influencer team is not anyone I want to see as a champion.

I think you’re probably right about the orbital. I’d also toss in a broken rib or two - that knee Gaethje threw when Ilia was turtled up was nasty. Perhaps a concussion as well.

He lost because his blood didn’t run red, white & blue!

Even if so, there’s no reason why they couldn’t have asked for an experienced doctor given the magnitude of this event. It looks bush league to have a doctor that indecisive and easily overridden by the ref.

Either this or the doctor made the right call but was ignored by the ref due to peer pressure.

The grappling exchanges were interesting in that we knew Ilia would dominate, but when they were on the ground, I didn’t get that sinking feeling that Justin was in trouble like I did when he fought Khabib and Oliveira.

It wasn’t just that I was looking at a tired Topuria, but it was also Justin’s reactions. He didn’t panic and never really looked to be in serious trouble. He didn’t seem worried about the armbar or triangle, could have been because they were telegraphed, but after a little bit my worries went away.

Even when he got mounted later on it looked like Topuria was exhausted, Justin was resting and waiting him out, and looking for an opportunity to get up, which he did. I would hate to see a fresh Topuria on top of Gaethje like that.

He has 1 punch KO’d people though. Just a few I can think of are Vick, Barboza, and that high kick on Dustin. He also dropped Cerrone with a jab IIRC and has a ton of knockdowns.

It also depends on how he fights cause he doesn’t really go for one punch knockouts anymore, and shots he landed on Paddy would have killed anyone else. I feel like the best shot he throws is that collar tie uppercut, Ilia is tough as nails for eating those.

But yeah I don’t think he hits just as hard as Topuria. Topuria has one step below the death touch, then I would put Dustin below him, and Justin right below that. All guys have power but different levels.

Also want to add that while he doesn’t hit as hard as Topuria, that is only in the first two rounds, after that I think Gaethje hits harder.
