Am I correct in assuming you want a return to the old Tank Abbott & Don Frye days? I just don’t see the appeal. Sure, those days were fun but many of the matches were nothing more than sloppy streetfighting.

As for the fights being like intense sparring sessions, that’s what all combat sports are. There are rules to follow after all. It sounds to me like you’d be better off watching those fights from Burma that allow everything including headbutts.

Neat. Some real kumite shit.

When lots of money is involved, risks always get reduced.

Want people to take more risks, have them fight for a reputation. That’s King of the Streets for you.

Smoke filled moat pit is probably the best ring I’ve seen aside from what Karate Combat improved on YAMMA.

And they get ring outs like Virtua Fighter. Right on!

Street Beefs?!??!? Anyone?!??!?

Agreed.

Everything about the sport is subpar these days.

OneFC Friday night fights is some of the best combat out right now. Bunch of tiny no namers all fighting to get their name out there and it’s free on YouTube every week! Some amazing fights on those cards.

I loved the old school NHB days but I feel like people who say modern mma isn’t intense don’t really watch it. Watch guys like Gaethje, Olivera, Porier, Chandler and say they don’t really fight and I’ll tell you, you’re full of shit.

I don’t think anyone’s saying there aren’t good fights sprinkled throughout. Just that the overall product is worse. Fighters train “MMA” and their skillsets in each individual discipline are watered down so you basically see the same style vs style over and over. There isn’t the spontaneity or the uncertainty of what will happen next. I think @MasterOfMartialArts calls it “the meta.”

I miss the days when we had major competition. We’re basically down to a monopoly now.

Fights were more fun back in the 90’s cause guys sucked. If you wanna see mma in the 90’s today… just look at street fights on YouTube. Even amateur local mma has fighters that are usually too skilled to just brawl.

Ufc has sucked since shortly after women got involved.

Yeah it’s missing the unpredictability it used to have. Fighter hurts the guy and instead of going for the kill, he pulls guard for a guillotine or clinches against the cage. There are a lot of good fights and I still love the sport, but even the good ones follow similar patterns. I just recently watched Anderson vs Okami 1, I don’t know if y’all remember it. It was Rumble On The Rock. Anderson upkick decapitated Okami but got disqualified because it was illegal. They actually gave Anderson a loss for that fucking work of art. I can’t think of anyone (at least right now) that throws kicks like that.

Never apologize.

Yeah and the culture was just different back then. Guys fighting back then were either super high level athletes (Hendo, Arona, etc), or barroom tough guys (Tank, Kimo, etc) who would have ended up dead or in prison if they didn’t find fighting. There wasn’t much in between. Nowadays you have people with computer science degrees and exit plans. It’s just different.

It’s more than that. The depths of fighters skillsets are watered down. It used to be martial art vs martial art and the different defenses or lack thereof were great to see. Now we see people going through the motions like pro wrestling. “This guy does this, the correct move is that.” There’s less art to it.
