Ufc isnt really "fighting" anymore

My bad. Took me forever to reply cause I was doing something and MasterOfMartialArts said it better than I did :joy:

Create a new sport by getting rid of the gloves.

When you punch you’re going to have to punch like you mean it.

And it won’t take 8 minutes to finish a rear naked choke.

This is why people get so excited with the style vs style matchups, especially when it’s two guys who are REALLY good at what they do.

You said it better actually lol

Can you imagine kicking a guy from your back, knocking him out, then being told you lose?

There’s way more variety in styles and skills now.

Back in the time you’re talking about it was overwhelmingly wrestlers with basic or ugly striking.

There’s no doubt that there’s less of a “anything can happen at any moment” feeling around the sport these days, but that’s all down to everyone being more skilled and better defensively.

Oil checks too!

Bare Knuckle MMA, lol. Might as well. Eventually everything that’s old is new again.

Better athletes, 100%. More skilled, sure. More variety? Debatable. Everyone being more skilled just means more boring fights though. They’re all the same skill level!

To be fair, everyone knew it was against the rules, so it is what it is.

I wouldn’t call tank a bar room tough guy. I’d call him a powerlifter. Most tough guys can’t bench over 600

Not really, how often do we see a Kenpo specialist in MMA, or even a TKD stylist? And I mean black belt level. It’s exceedingly rare. Hell, I don’t even see many elite judokas anymore. I think what you’re saying is highly debatable and without thinking much about it, I’d have to disagree.

What we’re talking about is the style vs style matchups where each fighter is very good at their particular discipline. It made for exciting fights because you knew what they were good at, so it was interesting to see who could implement their style better, and how the other could or would stop them.

For most UFC fighters now, if you were to take them down, it’s likely that nothing would happen. His defense will be good enough to avoid a pass, but his offense won’t be good enough and he won’t be risky enough to try something.

I’m not saying these guys aren’t strong or athletic at all. I’m just saying they had little to no training, and didn’t have a lot of skill. The opposite of high level athletes who come in already accomplished in something.

And headbutts… oh the joy if they let those back in.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t have been DQ’d, it was in the rules, so that’s what was supposed to happen in that case.

I’m essentially saying if you remove that from the equation, it’s pretty amazing he did that, and sucks that a win isn’t on his record for it.

How quickly do the guys on bottom try to get up or throw up submissions to avoid being headbutted?

I stopped watching mma when all the Pride fighters had to come to the UFC and stop juicing however long before a fight to pass those stupid tests.

And when GSP stopping fighting to finish opponents and just fighting to win on points. That was a real blow to the soul of those who like to watch a not shit fight, in so far as mma can offer that is.

Edit: A “not shit fight” is jargon for a real fight… only those is the know… know.

While the lower level talent is definitely more skilled, im not convinced that the top fighters are any better. Prime GSP would still be champ.

Makes it a real fight, with real need to do shit that real fights make you do.

Also, the Gracie University bottom game becomes legit too so it’s a toss up as to how the Fight Gods assess such a situation.

Prime GSP who would finish anyone he fought or Prime GSP “I’ll just out wrestle this guy for a points win”?

The earlier version of GSP, no one but Hughes could handle, and even then only once.

The second version, meh, lots of fighters today would woop his ass.
