It’s Judo really. The BJJ community never wants to admit it, or at least some of them. They expanded on newaza but its basically the same thing.
I explain it as judo, but 80% groundwork instead of 80% stand up.
Basically Just Judo ?
Ah, yes. I see you know your judo well.
A cease-and-desist if you aren’t an official affiliate.
Sport Judo may have been mostly stand up but traditional judo isn’t 80 stand up 20 ground
I am a Judo Black belt however I don’t really practice much more, my judo school was about 50/50 standup / ground work
Gracie/BJJ is just a marketing ploy.
The point is that BJJ took the newaza game and built off of it and the stand up took a back seat. The other point is the BJJ absolutely is judo, just with an intense ground focus.

Its part of the honorable online Gracie Academy where commoners can hop from white to black faster than the Kardashians. They even accept Klarna’s buy now pay later program in case times be tight.
It’s funny listening to the start of that video about shit most of us knew 20+ years ago. It’s as stupid today as it was then.
A bunch of drama ass 3rd world behavior.
Not really. If you really want to understand how bjj developed, I highly recommend Robert Drysdale’s books. He does a great job of documenting the development of how ground work came to be more prevalent. It’s an oversimplification to say it’s just judo with more groundwork. BJJ has definitely surpassed judo substantially at this point with the breadth and complexity of the techniques and overarching strategy.
None of this is true. I’ve never paid for any of their online courses, but I do get some access through the law enforcement portals. Those classes are very well constructed and are highly detailed. I’ve trained with a couple guys at seminars who went from white through black using their curriculum, but they told me they have to actually roll and get tested at an academy and put in some minimum number of hours of mat time. Some of those guys are actually really good. The curriculum Gracie Jiu Jitsu provides is actually legit, although I think most people could get a better value from bjj fanatics. I don’t believe they allow anyone to promote to anything just by taking online classes. They used to do blue belts which no one agreed with, but now it’s some striped white belt or something and I think they still require some type of testing. The strength they provide is that their curriculum is very well constructed, clear and sequential. I can see how that is attractive to a lot of people who may not otherwise train at all.
Someone did a piece back on the old forum about some older bloated fella who couldn’t bend over to tie his shoes but achieved a black belt online in record time. He even had his picture taken with two of the brothers. You could imagine the amount of entertainment that thread provided.
That’s all I am saying. We have a lot of BJJ guys that come to our club as it’s one of the largest USJA schools and a lot of our guys do fine against them. That said we also learn from them.
