Do you know guys that roid in your BJJ school?

Yup I don’t ever plan on competing because I am trying to avoid long-term injuries. That said it’s raining and my foot hurts.

My nagging injuries come from training, not fights or competing.

It’s different for everyone I guess though.

Nagging is fine but I don’t want a torn ACL

Haha yeah but training is what got my ACL. Twice lol.

That’s why I’m super careful with where I train at or who I train with. I just want to learn and have fun for a long time.

Mine were all from just training too much. Trying to hard to win scrambles.

Honestly if I could go back, I wouldn’t do it clean. I would have been able to train more with fewer injuries. That’s the biggest reason I don’t begrudge anyone who is on the sauce
. injuries break and destroy a lot of us. By the time my mind got to black belt I couldn’t train enough to put it to use.

Feels like the twilight zone guy with all the books but broken glasses

Ive been trying to slow roll more, not exploding to sweep. I still need to get a little pop to escape but I tey to use more leverage and rocking.

I’ve never had my elbow broken in training.

I was 100% clean for all my comp and fights

Happened to be cleaning the spare bedroom where this was today

When I was a brown belt there just weren’t very many brown belts in their late 40s in the heavyweight division so I always ended up competing against younger and/or heavier guys. Or I’d get a first place medal in a bracket of 1.

I always competed because a bunch of guys from gym were competing. Basically just a social thing.

“Hey let’s all comp X.”

“Sure, I’ll bring snacks.”

Never really thought about fairness.

Weirdly enough I’ve only hurt my elbow training.

I treat comp subs very differently ever since I had a match with a black belt. He fell back for a toe hold, I escaped, slid into doa, and heel hooked him. It was tight, and I was doing the old slowly apply pressure. He didn’t tap. I tore his ACL. He didn’t tap. Then I realized I didn’t have real strength or breaking mechanics to break his tibia. He stuck his big toe in my asshole and used that as hamstring exposure to escape and darced me later in the match. I shit blood for a week and he had to have ACL surgery, and from that day on I never looked at even smaller comps the same.

If you are in an advanced division, or colored belt division, the time to tap is when the sub is first imminent. In an armbar, when the grip breaks. In kimura, when the hands separate. In a heel hook, as soon as there is heel exposure. Everything after that is the uke betting his escape mechanics against the other guys kindness/breaking mechanics. Tap early, and tap LOUDLY. No half ass pseudo brazillian taps, it’s your job to make sure the opponent, the ref, and the coaches know the instant you tapped and there’s no room for discussion if you et broken who’s fault it is.

It goes both ways. I tell my guys tap as soon as something is coming or else be prepared to be broken. And if they catch something, they better be trying to break it.

It sounds mean, a lot of people don’t like it. I tell those people they don’t have to compete, but that’s how competition should be treated

My elbow break was kind of a fluke. Guy had me with a Kimora grip and I had him in a calf slicer (weird position, I know). I straightening my arm trying pummel out of his grip and my elbow just snapped. Everyone involved was surprised. It was loud enough to where the score keeper went “oohhhh!!!” and the ref stopped the match right away.

I wasn’t really in a sub and didn’t feel like I was in any danger at all. The guy who broke (we’re actually friends now) was just trying to keep the arm so I couldn’t finish the calf slicer.

I didn’t even feel it break, just heard it. Thought I was fine and even half heartedly protested the stoppage.

I said “why did you stop it?” and ref said “you’re arm is broken.”

Looked at my arm and I was like, ok.

No pain until the next day.

Because it gives a great excuse for being out of shape and/or getting their ass beat in training or competition

My only breaks in comp were my foot getting broken. Similar situation, I was hunting an achilles lock (no heel hooks, it was blue belt) and the guy threw on a corkscrew toe hold. We heard a loud snap, I didn’t even realize it was me. Ref stops, asks me if I’m ok. I say “yeah, I’m fine? Is he ok?” Guy says yeah and they put me back in the corscrew toehold and say go. Match goes to EBI OT, I win on escape time, and as soon as I stand up after the match I realize “oh yeah, that was indeed my foot that made that noise” lol

That is quite the size difference and of course Kerr also a knowledgeable experienced grappler.

A better comparison or demonstration of GJJ would be against a strong welterweight.
