Who's your favorite boxer of all time?

Dorsey was awesome.

Do you think Ali is overrated?

Most people seem to refer to him as the unquestionable GOAT

Sometimes the old adage ‘styles make fights’ is true. Norton was a bad match up for Ali. Doesn’t make Ali any less great.

Several losses though. Is he truly the undebatable greatest heavyweight of all time?

For argument sake. There are 2 great heavyweight champs that are undefeated. Neither is discussed as the goat.

I feel like this has a huge impact on both fighters’ legacies. Part of Ali’s claim to being the greatest is that he usually won, and when he didn’t, he ended up beating that opponent 2/3 in the trilogy (not counting when Ali was clearly well past his prime). If Norton bested Ali 2/3 or 3/3 it has to change the way Ali is regarded. It also elevates Norton.

BT, do you think the robbery happened simply because Ali was beloved and people wanted him to win?

I think it does make Ali less great. Not that it makes him not great, but I do think it makes him less great. And the robberies with the decisions unfairly insulate Ali from that reality, and deny Norton the credit he deserves.

Two favorite eras / collections are the “Five Kings” Heavyweights of the 70’s with Ali / Norton / Frazier / Foreman / Holmes, and “Four Kings” of Hagler / Leonard / Hearns / Duran in the 80’s.

Then singularly I loved Arturo Gatti’s style of heart / toughness / skill, and probably have never seen a more impressive display of athleticism / speed / power than prime RJJ.

Not sure about undebatable greatest HW, but think his resume is more impressive than Rocky or Usyk. Think Joe Louis has a strong case for best HW tho he did fight a few bums.

With regards having losses. Every top fighter is gonna lose of they are fighting the best/fellow greats. It’s how they come back from defeat that makes them even more impressive. Not everyone can cherry pick opponents like Mayweather.

BTW Marciano beat a 37 y/o Louis. Usyk is 38 and looks like he’s only getting better.

Usyk is in a weak HW era though.

And that was arguably his best win, but Louis was past it and only fighting to pay the tax man. And Louis was doing OK until he wasn’t

Very true. Mayweather is one of the all time greats, but he’s like the LeBron of boxing. No one has listed him as their favorite in this entire thread.

Pacquiao is my favorite for the exact reason that he is the opposite of “Money Mayweather”.

True I’m just saying everyone acts like Louis was way too old and that that fight shouldnt count. Same as Tyson’s win over Larry Holmes.

Heavyweights seem to age differently than lighter weights.

I know someone on here that would.

Not gonna draw attention to it though lol.

Those fights count and are notable wins. But both Louis and Holmes were coming out of retirement whereas Usyk has been active AND only half the amount of pro fights.

I dont know a whole lot about either TBH. But Louis’ record and ages during those fights certainly don’t look like he was coming out of retirement.

Holmes looks like he fought 25 or so times after the Tyson fight winning most of those as well.

Holmes had like 20 wins after the Tyson fight and went the distance in a title fight with Holyfield.

It not like beating peak Holmes, but it’s not something to dismiss either. And it wasn’t even a close fight. Holmes had nothing for him.

Its crazy how often those guys used to fight. 8 fights in 1951 for Louis. Crazy.

There was a retired pro boxer at my weight lifting gym about 15 years ago I used to chit chat with until he got kicked out for photographing the ladies’ Zumba class. He told me he used to have pro fights every month. Not sure if I believe that though.
